I recently got a Digitech Trio to check out. I've tried using loopers at home, but ultimately, they don't provide the sort-of feel of playing with other folks. I've played with backing tracks, and that can be better.
With the Trio, you strum in a song structure using the simplest chords and rhythm you can, and it learns the chords and tempo, then provides a bass and drums accompaniment. You pretty much use it like a looper, clicking it off on the rhythm before the beginning of the song comes around again.
I wasn't sure I'd like it. Turns out, I absolutely love it. Not that I'd use it to play out with. But it's great for practice - beats a metronome, hands down - and for working out parts to new tunes, etc.
This video isn't meant to showcase my playing or sound at all - just playing an improv of Shenandoah to demonstrate it. When the melody came back around at the end, my phone rang, so I faded the video... BTW - this is just an iPhone 6 set up to capture the video. I did the fades and added the Trio footswitch bit in iMovie...

Yeah, I do kind of. So I grew a beard, and then Bill grew one too. He’s stalking me! ;-)
The pad is primarily a Strymon TimeLine used with an expression pedal to swell the volume and repeats on the echoes.
