I'm just getting hip to Julian Lage - what a phenomenal musician! Can anyone recommend particular tracks/albums? I love his solo and duo acoustic work...especially the more esoteric stuff (as always, I'm not a jazz standards guy) and what a tone...so warm almost like nylon strings, but it's definitely steel string. He makes me realise I've got so much to learn!

They're good, don't get me wrong, but I can't listen to them over and over. some more vids. m.youtube.com/watch?v=icQ7qMrXazEm.youtube.com/watch?v=8fWQ3L1siNM

But with World's Fair, he's relaxed and sounds more at ease with his playing. Less notes. More feel. Can't wait to see where he goes. Bob

I'd agree. I'm still checking him out - been listening on Spotify for about a week. I'd previously heard his debut which is much more muso sounding. To me, it's that intimate acoustic stuff with the lovely little tunes balanced between folk jazz and avant garde that resonate.
I thought I was alone on this one, I'm glad you guys chimed in. The thought of Julian and Bill playing together is something else - I can't wait to hear that!

I've bought Worlds Fair a few weeks ago and have been listening to it almost constantly. I'm genuinely blown away by it. It seems to have a tremendous depth to the composition and the harmony, whilst still having a level of innocent simplicity that the best of BF has. And the tone he coaxed out of that guitar - it's just sublime.

Still into Julian Lage…been watching videos of him on Youtube…those etudes are something else. He's like Frisell crossed with Villa Lobos and Django. There's so much depth in that World's Fair album, I'm still swimming in it. I've managed to transcribe the main sections of Red Prairie Dawn, Day and Age, Gardens and Peru. I haven't tackled the solos yet, but have copped some good licks.
On transcribing: I'm using a program called 33 RPM to slow stuff down. Also using Pro Tools LE to go through the waveform with the "tab-to-transient" function is a great way to get the notes, if not the actual rhythm. I also tried a sneaky audio-to-MIDI conversion in Ableton and then importing into Sibelius, but the result is terrible and unreadable. I genuinely believe that the way software is going, there'll be a way off doing this in the future.
